Taylor Smith, Reimagined. Travis Kelce Would Be Proud.
No sports stuff today, just an interview about my jazzed-up, funked-up cover of T-Swift's "Blank Space."
Last week, my reinterpretation of the Taylor Swift classic “Blank Space” dropped, courtesy of Gold Note Records. The Gold Note publicity team put together the below quickie interview. Check it out, and if you’re so inclined, repost! Appreciate y’all.
Why Taylor Swift?
AG: My 10-year-old daughter — who's a huge Swiftie — begged me to do a Tay-Tay song. Who was I to refuse?
Why "Blank Space"?
AG: When choosing pop songs to cover instrumentally, you have to pick stuff with melodies that can be recognized when hummed. This is one of the most hummable tunes in Taylor's catalog, and probably her most melodic single — something with which plenty of Swifties will probably disagree.
Speaking of Swifties, do you think her fans will appreciate this?
AG: Some. My daughter loved it, but her Swiftiest friend didn't. So we'll set the odds at 50/50.
What are the odds your fans will dig it?
AG: Better than 50/50 — I'd guess closer to 75/25. I liken it to Miles Davis' covers of "Time After Time" and "Human Nature." Upon their initial release, jazz listeners weren't too impressed. But within a couple of years, they were favorites amongst us Miles heads.
Any other Taylor covers in the works?
AG: If the Swifties ask, I shall deliver. Hell, if "Blank Space" makes some noise, I'll even do a whole album. So 50/50.
